Mirny Diamond Mine Pictures
The Mirny Diamond mine is the world’s largest diamond mine. It is located in Siberia, Russia, next to the town of Mirna Russia.
As you can see from these pictures, this Russian diamond mine is truly massive. It is 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) deep, and 525 meters (1,722 feet) in diameter.
The Mirny mine was founded in 1955, and quickly because the Soviet Union’s largest mine – so large, in fact, that Russian diamonds quickly became the Soviet Union’s largest export. Ironic, because being boringly Soviet, they only founded it so that they could use diamonds in their military technology.
At its peak in the 1960s, the Mirny mine produced 10 million carats on diamonds per year. That’s two tonnes.
