Is it just me, or does Vladimir Putin’s latest public statement make it seem like he’s completely off his rocker?
Am I a pure democrat? Of course I am, absolutely. But do you know what the problem is? Not even a problem but a real tragedy? The problem is that Im all alone, the only one of my kind in the whole wide world. […]There is no one to talk to since Mahatma Gandhi died.
When I first read the quote on another blog, I thought it was a hoax, or that Putin had somehow been misquoted or taken out of context. But a transcript of the entire interviewhas been published on his official Presidential website, for all to see.
I’ve heard a lot in the past about how Putin is a man completely in control of his brief, and never says anything in public without a purpose, but come on, this is just plain daft.
By claiming he is the world’s sole “pure democrat” in the face of all evidence and then going on to compare himself to Gandhi, all Putin does is portray himself as a deluded nutter.
Surely?
This meant to be a joke of humor and I can understand why he said it. The journalist asked a question “Do you think you’re a democrat?”. No matter what Putin says the journalist will write:
1. Yes. – Putin is a hypocrite
2. No. – Putin himself acknoledges that he’s a dictator.
3. Don’t know. – Two of the above.

Absolutely agree with the above comment. By the way, Putin’s answer to the question still did not top his “circumcision” quote a couple of years back.
Putin’s sense of humor is wacky, so is Russian humor in general is. 🙂 This one is simply hilarious!
Putin’s humour is hillarious. Far better than the worn out “we’re the one and only superpower – joke” or the “mission accomplished” – joke we usually hear all day long. Go Vladimir, Go !!! 🙂
Translation of this joke, in my opinion: I’m sick and tired of your stupid questions. Since you are too dumb to get my drift when I’m giving you a serious answer, how about this one? Choke on it.
Is it just me, or is there a real surplus lately of loony national leaders?
Maybe, but I don’t think Putin is loony…;)
In this case, Putin is either loony or he’s not. Was he mocking the question and giving a basically ironic answer or was he serious? Sometimes I scratch my head at the words and actions of Putin, to say the least, but I don’t think he could have said this without it being playful.
I think the reason I found Putin’s comment funny is that I like that kind of humor. It’s black, black, black, dripping with sarcasm and contempt. Look at the way he answered the “What happened to the Kursk?” question on American TV. Everybody was complaining about his ‘smirk’, but I think what made him smirk was not the topic, but the stupidity of the question. You could translate it as: “Is this what passes as a clever question on American TV? Oh my.”
Something along these lines.
I think one also has to consider his temperament. When you see him on TV, he seems like somebody with a serious edge — I think it’s really hard for him not to blow up in face of what he thinks is stupid or just plain annoying. I think by temperament, he’s a dictator, but intellectually, he knows that he cannot be one. So, he tries to be as reasonable as he can, but he uses his humor as an outlet.
Imagine having to be nice to dim-wits all the time. They are morons, they understand only half of what you are trying to say, and even less of what you are trying to do. And they are too dumb to know when you poke fun of them. So, you poke fun of them all the damn time, as often as you can, just to stop yourself from beating the living daylight out of them.
The man’s job is to run the largest country in the world under some of the most difficult circumstances. And as if that wouldn’t be enough, he has to talk to journalists — a profession that doesn’t, as a rule, attract the sharpest knives in the drawer.
Most journalists who write about politics would be incapable of running a laundromat, and they expect somebody like Putin to give them respect? Gimme a break.
Unfortunately, Putin fails to recognize that these nincompoops have a very influential role in the West, and they feel his contempt and that’s why the hate him, among other things.
“Unfortunately, Putin fails to recognize that these nincompoops have a very influential role in the West…”
All true, and one might add that even more unfortunately Putin also fails to recognize that these nincompoops(the Russian nincompoops that is) should have a very influential role in Russia as well, even though we can all agree that the aggregate IQ of the worlds journalist is lower than Putins, mine or yours.
