If you’re a fan of Russian football (yes, I mean Russian soccer!), then news can be hard to come by. Yes, if you speak a bit of Russian there are plenty of Russian language football news sites around, not to mention the official Russian Premier League site, but if you want to read about Russian football in English, then options are thin on the ground.
I recently came across a couple of sites that provide news about Russian football in English, though, so I thought I’d share.
Footy Matters Russian Premier League News
Footy Matters seems like quite a young site, and its primary focus is English football. It’s been slowly expanding into a few other international leagues, though, and rather than just focusing on the obvious ones (Italy, Spain, Germany), it’s also taken the brave move of covering Russian Premier League news and the US MLS.
I have to say, I’m really impressed with their coverage of Russian football though. A lot of sites post the occasional report, but Footy Matters have provided consistent weekly updates from every round of the 2011 Russian Premier League so far. Each week’s update contains a brief report from every single match, plus it usually contains video highlights (via that old standby, Youtube). As well as that, they’re also publishing the odd feature article – a great example is their current series naming the players that would make their Russian Premier League Team of the decade – the latest post focused on the best Russian Premier League midfielders between 2002 and 2012.
Author Alex Jackson seems to be doing a great job, and I’m really enjoying reading the weekly updates. If you’re at all interested in Russian football, I’d encourage you to check out the site. Here’s the link – Russian Premier League News at Footy Matters.
The Offside Russian Football News
The only other site I could find that provides semi-regular coverage of Russian football was The Offside. They’re much less consistent that Footy Matters, though. In fact, they’ve only posted a few articles this year – none since February, and none on this season’s Premier League. Most of their coverage is pretty interesting and in reasonable depth, but a lot of it is skewed towards the Russian international team, rather than Russian domestic football. Here’s a link to the Offside’s Russian Football coverage.
Any others?
As far as I know, that’s pretty much it for news of Russian footy. If you know of any other sites that are worth checking out, then let me know in the comments!
