		<description>Surely you&#039;re joking--every Russian has heard of Khalkhin Gol, although few know any specifics of that battle. For most, it&#039;s just a minor episode, although it helped to keep Japan at bay later. BTW, nobody (loosely speaking) in Russia has heard of Iwo Jima--that is, everybody knows the US fought Japan in WWII and dropped the A-bomb but little more.</description>

I&#039;d certainly never heard of it until a couple of years ago.  And I&#039;ve been told many times that I qualify as a nobody.  So there!</description>

I&#039;m guessing Russian history was featured fairly prominently in the curricula of Comecon countries, so I imagine a lot of Eastern Europeans will have heard of it -- not to mention the Japanese and Mongolians.  In general, I&#039;d say it&#039;s dangerous to generalize from what Americans have never heard of to what anybody else has never heard of.</description>
