Suicide bomber in Red Square?

by Andy on August 3, 2005

Mosnews are reporting that a man tried to blow himself up in Red Square.  He only had a small amount of explosives on him through in a very open space, so it’s not clear if he was trying to take anyone else with him.  Either way, he failed and is now in custody.

A source in the law enforcement bodies told Interfax news agency that the man walked on to the square and lit a crude homemade fuse fastened to two small videocassette boxes and a cellophane package that he was hiding in his trousers. The source refused to specify, however, when the incident took place.

Mosnews are calling him a suspected suicide bomber, although the authorities don’t seem to think it was a terrorist (or even an attempted terrorist) attack.  Curious.
