Voting has already started in the Russian presidential elections. Reuters is first with the breaking news that little known independant candidate Vladimir Putin has edged into a surprise early lead.
More reassuringly (or perhaps not, depending on your point of view) early indications from the far east are that the turnout will comfortably exceed the magic number of 50%.
The Itar-Tass news agency said more than 75 percent had voted in the far eastern Chukotka region while neighbouring Yakutia had broken the 50 percent barrier by 2 p.m. local time.
