Russia has won the Eurovision Song Contest. Dima Bilan’s song, Believe, notched up 272 points from Europe’s voters, comfortably beating Ukraine’s 230 points into second place.

Russia’s Eurovision Song Contest victory crowns a spectacular week for Russia – in the space of eight days Russia have won the World Ice Hockey Championships, Zenit St Petersburg have won the UEFA Cup and now, Dima Bilan has won Eurovision.
So successful have Russia been that poor old Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s new President must be wondering if his job is just about telephoning people to offer his congratulations.
Anyway, in honour of Russia’s victory, I’ve updated the Every Russian Eurovision Video Ever page, to include Dima Bilan’s song, Believe.

Spot the odd one out, eh?
Hopefully when Russia hosts next year’s Eurovision they will take a leaf from the Ukrainians and allow visa free travel for European tourists for the summer, extending it indefinitely thereafter. It was purely because of this that I went to Yalta in summer 2005 rather than Russia.

That would be great, and who knows, maybe the dizzying heights of 3 visa-free days last week may have convinced them of the benefits.

What’s next, the Stanley cup? There are Russians on both teams, whoever wins, it’s the victory for Russia!
What about the NBA title, is there a Russian anywhere? I should root for his team, I guess, for Rodina!!!

I’m sure that it was all arranged beforehand and that Bilan’s victory was bought. Special programs on TV scheduled in advanced, some comments in the media an other other clues make me think so.
