Russia to sell arms to Iraq

by Andy on November 20, 2004

According to the Jerusalem Post, Russia is about to resume selling arms to Iraq, this time with US approval.  Russia has had strong military links with Iraq for many decades and sold billions of dollars worth of weapons to Saddam during the 1970s and 1980s.

"Equipping the [Iraqi] army with Soviet-designed weapons, which are reliable and not that difficult to use and maintain, is the most efficient option," [Colonel General] Baluyevsky said in remarks carried by NTV television. "It was Gen. Jones who suggested that. I said I would report that to my leadership, but from my personal viewpoint it’s quite feasible."

The Post goes on to note that Russia’s nose was put out of joint by the US’ previous decision to arm the new Iraqi army with Bulgarian made Kalashnikovs.
