Before we get into the best posts of the week, some blog news:
- The Power Vertical is a new blog by Brian Whitmore and Robert Coalson, two jouranlists at RFE/RL. Brian and Robert have only been blogging for a couple of weeks, but already they’re packed TPV with excellent content . This definitely looks like a blog to bookmark / add to your RSS reader.
- Da Russophile has moved and renamed – please redirect your bookmarks to Sublime Oblivion.
- Robert Amsterdam has a shiny new look.
Now this week’s top blog posts:
- Talking of Robert Amsterdam – he keeps churning out the quality content. This post about Russia’s Financial Beslan is the pick of this week’s crop.
- Eugene Ivanov Reports on the latest United Russia Party conference. He sees a party suffering a crisis of identity.
- According to Lyndon, they’ve taken the crazy pipe decorations out of the ceiling at Sheremetyevo 2. What am I going to stare blankly at now when I’m travelling through Moscow??
- Dmitry Medvedev could be a great actor.
- Russia Blog looks back at 20th Century Pirates – released in 1980, it’s widely regarded as the greatest Soviet action movie ever.
OK. That’s it for this week. If you celebrate Thanksgiving (or even if you don’t) – have a great weekend!

Yes indeed, the “20th Centuries Pirates” was THE MOVIE – the first Soviet blockbuster/action-movie. I watched it like 10 times when I was a boy. Only one correction – it was released in 1979, not in 1980 (I remember it clearly – it WASN’T the year of the Moscow Olympiad – 1980). Please refer to the following Russian website that contains the essentials about the movie:

BTW, does anyone know what’s up with Sean’s Russia blog (http://box304.bluehost.com/suspended.page/disabled.cgi/seansrussiablog.org)?
Re-20th C pirates:
Yes, I loved that movie too.

Yes, indeed – I also couldn’t download Sean’s Russia Blog today (it’s still down as we speak). I suspect, that’s happened due to sharp and consistent criticism of Vladimir Putin and Kasparov-biased presentation of the current political events in Russia. I think Mr. Putin applied his powers, after all he is a very powerful man indeed:

@Russian President – yes, IMDB records the release date as 1979, but Russia Blog has it down as August 1980. I was a wee toddler at the time, so don’t feel qualified to adjudicate in this debate!
@Da Russophile – I noticed that Sean’s Russia Blog was down too. I emailed Sean & he told me he was having problems getting in touch with his hosts over the Thanksgiving Weekend. My thinking’s more in line with Dmitry’s – I suspect that right now, a team of Spetznatz are holding the hosting company staff hostage, to prevent the return of SRB…
