Chemesov at Rosoboronexport; Sechin at Rosneft; Yakunin at RZhD: these men triangulate where the VVP elite's power meets big money. They are currnetly untouchable. Watching what happens to them, I beleive, may largely answer your question, Andy.

In many ways, this is the only issue that really matters. I recall one analyst telling me: "Remember Putin cares more about the system he is building than his place in it", which I reckon to be pretty true (so I am hoping for option 2).

But in order to be President, Medvedev will need to be able to demonstrate that he can redistribute some wealth around his supporters, as VVP has done with his (e.g. Sechin at Rosneft). Now, some of these are the same people, but the overlap is not quite complete and, where it is not, that will be where the fun lays.

Nothing is ever a-b-c easy in Russia and I still think VVP & Co have some surprises planned for us to watch

Very interesting piece Andy, well thought out. I think option 3 will happen eventually - Russia is an Alpha-dog country, and unless he's got no balls at all, Medvedev will eventually try to loosen Putin's influence - that is assuming his taste for power is stronger than his friendship with Putin. Remember everyone thought Putin was a compliant mouse in 2000. And there are a lot of slighted people out there from Putin's reign - Sergei Ivanov, Mikhail Fradkov, and even people like Alexei Kudrin - Finance Minister is a huge high-profile job anywhere else, but all he's been is totally in Putin's shadow, inspite of all his efforts. Then again, maybe Putin will just run again for President in 2012 and Medvedev is simply keeping the seat warm after all.
