Now you see it… now you don't

by Andy on April 23, 2004

As a part of my occasional series on enterprising metal theft in the former Soviet Union, I bring you the news of the ultimate (so far) theft

A 30-meter radar tower weightng over 9 tons has been stolen in Vladimir Region, central Russia, the Regnum news agency reports. The tower was a secret military installation and was located on the territory of a military testing ground.

Although somewhat less difficult technically than the theft of an steam train, or an entire bridge, I feel this theft deserves extra style points for being able to spirit it away from under the noses of Russia’s finest.
