New Blog: Rick Docksai's Russia News

by Andy on March 14, 2009

Rick Docksai's Russia NewsRick Docksai’s Russia News is the latest blog to be featured in my series on new Russia blogs.

Rick is an independent journalist, and his new blog is home to his “ongoing assessments of the
economic and political scene in Russia and the CIS.”

Rather than taking the traditional (and rather tired) blog approach of a quick extract from someone else’s story followed by a short off the cuff comment, Rick sticks to slightly longer articles. Generally longer than the average blog post, but shorter than a fully fledged article, they give Rick the chance to actually put forward a considered argument or two.

The downside, of course, is that longer posts take longer to write. Which, taken to its logical conclusion (see, I can make an argument too!) means – less posts overall. So far, Rick seems to be averaging a post every week or two. But judging on his output to date, they’re worth waiting for.

I particularly liked Phantom Menaces, covering Russia’s defence industry (something I’ve written about a few times here), and Culture of Crackdown, which is cautiously optimistic about Medvedev, but signs off with a cautionary note: “It’s clear that the problem is a lot bigger than Putin. If so, then the antidote will have to be a lot bigger than Medvedev.”

I’m always on the lookout for new blogs about Russia. If you write one, or know of one, let me know, and I’ll write a brief introductory post here on Siberian Light.
