Members of the Mosnews Appreciation Society, rejoice!
After almost two years Mosnews, purveyors of bonkers Russian news have come back from the dead.
No-one really knows why Mosnews closed down way back in 2007, and in keeping with their mysterious ways, the new Mosnews site seem to have relaunched almost completely unannounced, too, sometime around the beginning of March.
If anyone knows the backstory to Mosnews long absence, please let us know in the comments.
I’m certainly not complaining, though. Top bonkers stories so far include:
‘Anti-crisis’ sausage prizes boost number of TV quiz participants
A Russian TV-channel registered a sudden increase in the number of participants in the SMS-quiz that started offering ‘anti-crisis’ prizes of sausage.
Russian old people’s home sealed with 38 people inside
Thirty-eight inhabitants of a Russian home for the elderly were sealed inside the building after a court ruled it was dilapidated and violated fire safety rules.
Large families of Siberian region to get free cows and hay in an anti-crisis action
Local authorities of a Siberian region have decided to purchase a cow and four tons of hay for each family with three or more children living in the country.
Mosnews isn’t just about bizarre news, though. They also built up a reputation for breaking ‘proper’ news and for interesting and insightful analysis. There’s lots of breaking news on the renewed Mosnews site, but little analysis yet – although their ‘Minority Opinion’ section looks to have some potential.
Welcome back Mosnews!
