I just saw this article in the Telegraph about Katya Galitzine’s trip to Lake Baikal (registration required). Its nice to find a mainstream press article about the region that doesn’t see it as just another transsiberian railroad stopover on the way to Beijing. The article itself is a good read – it gives a nice introduction to what the tourist can expect in the region, although I found this part rather depressing…
A blonde child gleefully played with the icy surf against the silhouette of Olkhon’s Shaman Rock while a television crew filmed her. It transpired that this was for a German reality TV show involving a family condemned to living through a Siberian winter on the island. The cameraman raised his eyes to heaven; for him this was the job from hell.
I prefer to see Siberia as Galitzine and Dostoyevsky saw it…
“In Siberia one can live a blissful life. The land is richly blessed and all that is needed is to make the most of it”.
