When the US spent millions of dollars supporting Georgia’s attempts to crack down on nuclear smugglers, I don’t think this was quite the outcome they had in mind:
Georgia… has thwarted another nuclear smuggling attempt. But instead of seizing the car “carrying a mixture of plutonium and beryllium,” Georgian officials sent the radioactive material back to Azerbaijan.

This might not be such a big deal, depending on amounts. Funny thing, I actually interpreted training sessions US offers for customs and border guards of the former USSR. One of the most striking facts was that if you put together all nuclear materials ever intercepted by all customs controls of the world, it would be something like 1/10 of what needed to build one bomb.
Since the original article is not clear, it is quite possible they did not actually find anything, except their instrumentation identified two radioactive materials. And after failed search, thry just sent the car back home.
