George Bush Senior in Moscow

by Andy on May 23, 2005

George Bush Senior is in Moscow this week, meeting with Presidents past and present.  After speaking to Moscow State University students alongside his old rival, Mikhail Gorbachev, Bush Sr was awarded a medal by President Putin for being old enough to have fought in the Second World War:

"Before we begin our conversation I would like to award a commemorative medal to you as a veteran of World War II," Putin told George Bush senior. "I know that you took part in the war and know the tragic incident linked with your participation when your plane was shot down," Putin said.

" We were happy to see your son, US President George W.Bush attending the VE-Day celebrations in Moscow, but we wanted to award You as a World War II veteran,” Putin said.

George Bush Sr’s visit to Moscow gives an interesting insight into the Putin-George W Bush relationship which, despite their differences in many areas, appears to be quite solid.  I know that Bush Sr is his own man, but surely Bush Jr would have had some objections to the trip if his relationship with Putin was really on the rocks.
