You’ve got to give the Estonian government some respect for originality and fearlessness at least, if not for brains. They’ve been discussing the issue of reparations for the $104 billion they claim Russia owes them for damages during the occupation of Estonia by the USSR.
Estonian government official Vello Salo generously suggested that if Russia was to hand over Novosibiirsk Oblast then Estonia would consider the matter closed.
The Russian Foreign Ministry told him where to go. And it wasn’t Siberia.

I have to say I’ve a fair amount of sympathy for the Estonian arguments, given the huge amounts of damage inflicted on Estonia by the illegal Soviet occupation and annexation, and given the Russian Federation’s willing self-identification as the legal successor state to the Soviet Union, at least insofar as goodies like the UN Security Council seat and the nuclear arsenal goes. If it’s willing to accept the benefits of the Soviet Union, why shouldn’t it be responsible for the deficits?
Why don’t they just go back and clean up after themselves? They left everything so junky and dumpy, maybe some paint and lightbulbs for the buildings that remain that they were responsible for birthing…
