Cricket for the Winter Olympics

by Andy on February 4, 2004

It has just come to my attention that people who live in snowy places are completely and utterly mad. Especially if they are English.

Russia has its own cricket league.

Apparently they don’t worry about the weather conditions quite so much as we do over in England. They just scrape clear a 22 yard patch of ice, and get on with whacking the ball around. These pointers on technique from David Waterhouse:

The “pitch” has the snow scraped off the ice. No spikes (or skates) allowed. Tip and run. Bowling was allot easier than I expected.

Batting was a different story. When you drive the ball hard your feet provide no anchor on the ice – so two things happen: your feet lift from under you, and your bat carries through and hits you on the back of the head!

Can you imagine Andy Flintoff, coming in to bat at the Moscow Oval? Ouch.
